A beautiful hand-painted wooden Christmas ornament from Russia.
Starting from the days of Peter the Great, in the 17th century, brightly painted wooden ornaments have been used to decorate Christmas trees in Russia. These beautiful ornaments represent a revival of a long forgotten art. The wood comes from birch or lime trees that are not endangered in Russia. Your appreciation of this art form helps provide much needed income to Russian families.
The painters are mostly women who are not artists by profession, but rather mothers with small children, high school students, or pensioners who are trying to help earn a living for their family.
